Program Description:

Explore the living legacy of an ancient civilization through its arts.

IndiaThis program studies the visual and performing arts of India — its architecture, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, film, dance, music, and drama — in historic and contemporary contexts. Students are challenged to consider the relationship between religion, art, and identity.

Major topics of study include: 

  • Critical theory, aesthetic theory, research ethics, and the methodology of how we study the arts of another society
  • What it means to be creative and how we assess the creativity of a society different from our own
  • India’s history and the ways in which the present has been shaped by the complexities of the past
  • The meaning and theories of aesthetic response in India
  • The language of rituals, signs, and symbols
