German Language & Area Studies at Freie University

Berlin, Germany is a magnet to students, musicians, artists and young people from around the world, Berlin offers a mix of urban edge and cultural freedom not found anywhere else in Europe. Studying at Freie University in Berlin for four to ten weeks will give you the opportunity to practice your German language skills, immerse yourself in German life and culture, and experience one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan cities. Students will be able to join Berlin’s international community by living and studying with students from all over the world.
Students have the opportunity to take German language classes at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced level during a 4 or 6 week program.  Students are required to have completed German 102 by the time they participate in the program. Students can also enroll in an area studies course. Area studies courses are taught in English and focus on a range of topics including history, art, political science, sociology, culture, architecture, business, urban studies, etc. Students will earn up to 4 credits for German language courses and variable credit for area studies courses.
Students will be able to select one of the following off-campus housing options – a single room in a suite-style student dorm, apartment, or homestay. All living arrangements are fully furnished and close to public transportation for a 30- to 45-minute commute.

The program cost varies by number/type of course and housing selection and starts at ≈$2,000. The price includes tuition, housing, course materials, and course related study visits within Berlin. Additional expenses include: airfare, meals, local transportation pass, international insurance and personal expenses. UIC Financial Aid may be applied and scholarships are available!
