Chris joined UIC as the Director of Study Abroad in May 2004. He earned his Masters degree in Asian Studies at the University of Hawaii and then continued graduate work as a Degree Fellow with the East West Center in Honolulu. His doctoral fieldwork focused on the cultural geography of pilgrimage and identity in the Narmada River valley of central India.
For over a decade he was a research consultant in India for international and non-governmental organizations. He worked on issues ranging from the tensions between agricultural production and cultural practice, to disease eradication strategies in vulnerable rural communities.
He then began a second career in international education. He spent three years as a study abroad Program Director in India and a dozen years as a college administrator and consultant developing curricula and overseeing academic study abroad programs in locations as diverse as Mongolia, Sumatra, Viet Nam, India, and the Pacific island nations of Fiji and Samoa.
